Orlando Fence Permit Guide

When you need a permit, when you do not, and how to get one fast. Rules for the City of Orlando, Orange County, Seminole County and beyond.

The basics

When you need a fence permit in Orlando.

General rule: repairs that put the fence back the way it was rarely need permits. Structural changes usually do.

No permit needed (typically)

Replacing a picket, board, panel or single post. Repairing hinges, latches or drop rods. Repainting or restaining an existing fence. Anything that leaves the fence structurally the same.

Permit needed (typically)

New fence installation. Full-section replacement. Height changes over 4 feet in the rear or 3 feet in the front. New pool safety fence. Structural rebuild after major storm damage. New gate structure.

Depends

Storm damage rebuilds that change the fence height or material. Repairs that require digging new post holes. Sometimes replacing multiple sections at once. The building department decides case-by-case.
